How Often Should You Replace Your Windshield Wipers?

Your windshield wipers should be replaced every six to 12 months. If that sounds like too big of a window, you can always check your windshield wipers and decide for yourself when they need to be replaced.

First of all, check your rubber wiper blades at least once a month. They act as squeegees that wipe away water and snow from your windshield and leave it looking spotless. If they are rough to the touch or if you see cracks and gouges in the rubber, your wipers should be replaced soon.

Second of all, look at your windshield when you actually use your wipers. If you see streaks in the glass, your wipers are no longer doing their job and should be replaced before they start to affect your visibility.

Listen to Your Windshield Wipers

You can also listen to your windshield wipers when you turn them on. If they are in good shape, they should be nearly silent. If they’re not in good shape, they will probably make an annoying squeaking or squealing sound as they fail to wipe the rain from your windshield.

Finally, check your windshield wipers’ metal arms and joints for rust and other signs of damage. Rust won’t exactly impair your visibility, but they are a sign that your windshield wipers are past their prime and could break off when they’re being used.

If you notice any of these signs, you probably need to replace your windshield wipers. The good news is that this isn’t very hard to do. You can buy replacement windshield wipers from the nearest automotive store and install them yourself in most cases. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this or don’t know what windshield wipers to buy, bring your vehicle over to Kenny Kent Lexus. Our friendly staff can take a look at it and determine what windshield wipers it needs.
