Now in its third consecutive year with its 2021 edition, the Lexus UX makes a few improvements to the UX200 and hybrid UX250h. Classified as a subcompact crossover, the UX gains a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert as a standard safety feature. The hybrid model gets a new adjustable rear cargo board that increases capacity by five cubic feet.
The 2021 Lexus UX is split into UX 200 with F Sport and Luxury variants and UX250h hybrid with F Sport and Luxury variations. Both rows of seats—which accommodate up to five people—are covered in synthetic leather. Automatic climate controls are on the driver and front-passenger sides for customized heating and cooling preferences. The UX’s infotainment system brings together a six-speaker AM/FM stereo system, Bluetooth hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, a trial subscription to SiriusXM Radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, four USB ports, and a Wi-Fi hotspot for 4G LTE Internet access. A 7-inch screen referred to as the Lexus Remote Touch interface provides a way to execute functions by touching the corresponding icons it displays.
True to its orientation, the F Sport has unique front sport seats with added side bolstering and a sport steering wheel with paddle shifters. The top-level Luxury comes with a moonroof, front-seat heating and cooling, a hands-free power liftgate, and 10.25-inch touchscreen navigation.
The “200” suffix that the 2021 UX bears is derived from the 2.0-liter displacement of its four-cylinder engine, which outputs 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. This engine is pinned to a smooth-operating 10-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and the UX’s fuel economy numbers—at 29 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway—is among the best in its class. For a tighter feel on the road, go with the F Sport, which has a sport-tuned suspension. All-wheel drive is only offered on the hybrid UX250h.
In addition to the previously mentioned blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, the 2021 Lexus UX includes a rearview camera, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning, lane trace assist, and lane-keep assist for driver assistance. Six airbags are present to protect if there’s a crash.
